The main reason why it is often difficult to identify a false prophet is because of Biblical and theological illiteracy. This does not mean that mature and well versed in Scripture believers cannot be deceived by a false prophet. JESUS told everyone to beware of false prophets to let us know that we are all vulnerable to the possibility of being deceived. So what is the antidote for this deception that has propagated our nation and the world? The answer is in order to spot the fake, we need to study the real. JESUS told us that we will know a tree by its fruit. So the fruit of a true prophet of GOD is that he or she DOES NOT compromise GOD's WORD regardless of the cost. On the other hand, a false prophet will compromise (change and/or adapt) GOD's WORD for alternate motives such as convenience, greed, prestige, recognition, larger number of church attendees, etc.

Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree produces good fruit, but the corrupt tree produces evil fruit. A good tree can’t produce evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree produce good fruit. Every tree that doesn’t grow good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them. (Matthew 7: 15-20).
